Baby animals eat in different ways too. Baby bears nurse, baby wolves learn to eat meat quickly, and other animals eat grass and drink their mother's milk. Other subjects like protection and shelter are examined as well as grooming, moving from place to place, and what their families look like. This book is a celebration of the diversity of mammals on the earth and all of the ways in which they are loved and cared for as they grow.

Judge offers just enough information on each animal to make the book readable. She gives intriguing glimpses of each animal before moving on to the next. It's a fast paced book that merrily jumps from one animal to the next. More in-depth information on each of the featured mammals can be found at the end of the book.

Judge's art is exceptional. Her animals are filled with personality. The baby mammals look straight out at the reader at times, their parents' eyes are filled with love, and there is a tangible joy to each of the images. The cuteness factor could have been unbearable, but instead it's perfect, just the right amount of cute and wild mixed together.

A great choice for smaller children who love animals, this book is gorgeous as well as informative. Appropriate for ages 4-6.

And further increasing learning, reading, and interest levels by adding the descriptions and resources in the back of the book. The illustrations are also simple yet beautiful.

I'm pleasantly surprised. It's not just just a book about cute baby animals. And it's not just a book good for learning to read or reading aloud. It's also not simply a picture book with good illustrations. It is a book without obvious mistakes. It's a simple thing to ask for, but I find that most children's books have tons of nonsense. Not this one, both the main story and the details on illustrations are true. The author does indeed know what she writes about. I'm pleasantly surprised. Each description is accompanied by a detailed drawing of the animals discussed, a baby and their parents, these images can help a student understand what we are talking about. This book demonstrates the differences between different species of mammals while showing us that there are many similarities as well.

Personal Response - I thought that this book did an excellent job of relaying information to the reader in a way that kept me engaged. I loved seeing how every animal is different, but that since we are also mammals that these animals care for their young similarly to the way we do. I thought it demonstrated that animals are caring and possess emotions like ours.

Classroom Connections -
1. Parent Interviews: have students interview their parents about how they were raised and what they were like as a baby

2. Animal Profile - Have students complete a research project on a mammal discussed in the book.

This is such a sweet, nonfiction book that teaches children about baby mammals and their parents.

The illustrations throughout the book are so beautiful and I imagine several students would have a blast deciding on which baby animal is their favorite! Each page lists a different baby animal and the different ways its parents feed, protect, groom, play, and love their babies. The last page has a picture of each animal and it lists more in depth facts about it. The language and grammar are simple

The final page teaches that every baby mammal needs gentle care and teaching just like you!

This would be a sweet book to use when introducing families and/or animals to children. This could be read aloud to a group of students and then each one could be assigned to an animal. The student can then explore more facts about the baby animal and compare it to their own family.

Judge's format works well with introducing young audiences with factual information about a number of different animals, stressing that all baby animals have needs that are met by their families. Just like kids do. Different needs are introduced with a simple statement followed by examples.
It opens with:
"A baby is born." (The db spread spread holds an adorable illustration of doe and fawn. The following spread holds other examples.)

This book teaches about the habits of different animals during childhood. It starts by talking about different animals being born. Then the baby gets hungry. It talks about hot grizzly bear cubs do not wean for two or three years, but a wolf pup grows teeth in their first three weeks. The book talks about how different animal babies need protection, shelter, and movement. Then the baby plays and learns how to survive without its mother.

This book could be used to teach about different types of animals and about the life cycle.

Summary: This book describes how baby animals grow and learn. It also tells us how they act with their parent and how long their parent stays close by. At the end of the book, the author relates the animals to us as babies.

Adorable illustrations of baby animals and their parents. Lita Judge explains how baby animals are when they are born and how they need family, food, protection, shelter, to move. I love animal nonfiction books with alternative structures. This one is based around similar needs among baby mammals. The illustrations are beautiful and the short paragraphs are engaging and provide interesting, rare information about a wide variety of animals. Structure is nice for a read aloud.

A good compliment for taking toddlers or preschoolers to the zoo. A whole slew of baby animals is featured and a fun fact or two is given about each of them. The drawings of baby animals are super cute and make me want to go and adopt a a baby polar bear or mountain goat. A solid non fiction picture book for animal lovers.

It would have been easy to get overly wordy, but this does a really good job of keeping the information and the vocabulary manageable for young readers, so the text is good.

The art is outstanding: attractive and expressive. Really well done.

I think the illustrations in this book are really neat! But my children's book reviews are based on how much my one year old son liked them, and this book I barely see him flip through, and when I stop to read it he runs off to play. Might review it again later if he becomes more interested in it. I think the illustrations in this book are really neat! Born in the Wild is a gorgeous picture book about baby animals and the parents who care for them. The story explains all the different needs that a baby has. It features specifically mammals. The illustrations are phenomenal. I loved that it included baby bears nursing so that my baby will see that this type of feeding is natural. Highly recommend this book! It is also published in hardcover format.

Yes, this does seem like a long list but to most kids these are things that they do wonder about when they see animals. They author does a great job of making the language easy and relatable to the kids that would be reading this book. The illustrator also did an amazing job with the pictures, the kids that love baby animals would fall in love with these animals by just looking at these pictures. It also doesn't go through every animal when it talks about all of the different things so it picks some of the ones you would have no idea about and is able to educate you about them.

The second grade class would be the class that would like this book most and being able to do the activity based on how long it is and the amount of words inside of it. Kindergarten and first grader would enjoy this book when they looked at the pictures that would just not be able to follow along with the reading as much. For their activity that would be able to pick one of the animals that were talked about in the bool. From their they would have time to use their IPads and do some research on their animas that they choose. They would be able to pick three of the different things that the book told about the animals. These being their options, how some of the babies are born, how some of the different babies eat, what kind of protection they need and how they get it, what kinds of shelter is needed by these animals, ow and when the babies begin to move, how the babies become parts of their families, how the babies learn to grow strong and be able to play, and who the babies learn from. They would find out the answers for three of the things with the animal of their choice and then create a poster using their iPad and google to share with their class. Almost every student would be able to pick a different animal so this would be a great learning experience for many of the kids in the class with their animals.
