Judge offers just enough information on each animal to make the book readable. She gives intriguing glimpses of each animal before moving on to the next. It's a fast paced book that merrily jumps from one animal to the next. More in-depth information on each of the featured mammals can be found at the end of the book.
Judge's art is exceptional. Her animals are filled with personality. The baby mammals look straight out at the reader at times, their parents' eyes are filled with love, and there is a tangible joy to each of the images. The cuteness factor could have been unbearable, but instead it's perfect, just the right amount of cute and wild mixed together.
A great choice for smaller children who love animals, this book is gorgeous as well as informative. Appropriate for ages 4-6.

Each description is accompanied by a detailed drawing of the animals discussed, a baby and their parents, these images can help a student understand what we are talking about. This book demonstrates the differences between different species of mammals while showing us that there are many similarities as well.
Personal Response - I thought that this book did an excellent job of relaying information to the reader in a way that kept me engaged. I loved seeing how every animal is different, but that since we are also mammals that these animals care for their young similarly to the way we do. I thought it demonstrated that animals are caring and possess emotions like ours.
Classroom Connections -
1. Parent Interviews: have students interview their parents about how they were raised and what they were like as a baby
2. Animal Profile - Have students complete a research project on a mammal discussed in the book.

The illustrations throughout the book are so beautiful and I imagine several students would have a blast deciding on which baby animal is their favorite! This is such a sweet, nonfiction book that teaches children about baby mammals and their parents. The illustrations throughout the book are so beautiful and I imagine several students would have a blast deciding on which baby animal is their favorite! Each page lists a different baby animal and the different ways its parents feed, protect, groom, play, and love their babies. The last page has a picture of each animal and it lists more in depth facts about it. The language and grammar are simple enough for a child to read, but there is enough information to keep the child curious and engaged. The final page teaches that every baby mammal needs gentle care and teaching just like you!
This would be a sweet book to use when introducing families and/or animals to children. This could be read aloud to a group of students and then each one could be assigned to an animal. The student can then explore more facts about the baby animal and compare it to their own family.

Just like kids do. Different needs are introduced with a simple statement followed by examples.

I liked this book. It was nice to get different perspective
This book teaches about the habits of different animals during childhood. It starts by talking about different animals being born. Then the baby gets hungry. It talks about hot grizzly bear cubs do not wean for two or three years, but a wolf pup grows teeth in their first three weeks. The book talks about how different animal babies need protection, shelter, and movement. Then the baby plays and learns how to survive without its mother.I liked this book. It was nice to get different perspectives from different animals. A child who loves animals would really enjoy this book and learn a lot from it.
This book could be used to teach about different types of animals and about the life cycle.

Evaluation: This is a very cute book to talk about mammals and how they are born and what they are like as babies. Overall, I liked this book.

The art is outstanding: attractive and expressive. Really well done.
The second grade class would be the class that would like this book most and being able to do the activity based on how long it is and the amount of words inside of it. Kindergarten and first grader would enjoy this book when they looked at the pictures that would just not be able to follow along with the reading as much. For their activity that would be able to pick one of the animals that were talked about in the bool. From their they would have time to use their IPads and do some research on their animas that they choose. They would be able to pick three of the different things that the book told about the animals. These being their options, how some of the babies are born, how some of the different babies eat, what kind of protection they need and how they get it, what kinds of shelter is needed by these animals, ow and when the babies begin to move, how the babies become parts of their families, how the babies learn to grow strong and be able to play, and who the babies learn from. They would find out the answers for three of the things with the animal of their choice and then create a poster using their iPad and google to share with their class. Almost every student would be able to pick a different animal so this would be a great learning experience for many of the kids in the class with their animals.
